He added miniature turbine engines to a watch, with turbine blades on the dial as the running seconds and turbine blades on the back, that rotated when the barrel was wound. By merging mechanical artistry with aviation, he won the contest. IWC Schaffhausen decided to produce the watch in an edition of only 12 pieces. The innovative and rare model quickly became coveted among watch collectors. Now, as the Associate Director of Watch & Movement Assembly, Markus Bühler returns with a re-edition of his namesake Big Pilot Turbine Tourbillon.
Of course, its centerpiece is the flying minute tourbillon at 6 o’clock, its cage sculpted as an aircraft turbine, framed by a stark black lacquered dial with luminous numerals and propeller-style hands. The 43mm platinum case gives it the presence and stature it deserves, secured by a black cordovan strap that grounds the design in its utilitarian roots. Inside, the in-house Caliber 82905 delivers an 80-hour power reserve, with IWC Schaffhausen’s Pellaton winding system and hardened ceramic components.

Each watch goes through a careful restoration process conducted by one of our master watchmakers. Our restoration process begins with a full movement service and overhaul if necessary to inspect each and every piece of the movement. Next, each piece is cleaned, lubricated and put back together. Any worn or broken parts are replaced using only original manufacture parts to maintain authenticity. The restoration process includes expert cleaning and polishing, testing of water pressure and magnetization and the replacement of straps.
