The Audacity Of Excellence, The Lady-Datejust

It’s not easy for a watch to become an icon.

A classic timepiece designed for a lady
A model’s appeal needs to span beyond a generation, with qualities that speak to varying age groups and style preferences. To become an icon, a watch must be timeless, with the quality of being that “one good watch” that goes anywhere, day to night, and lasts a lifetime - the Lady-Datejust is an icon.

“A classic timepiece designed for a lady.” This is how some may describe the Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust.

Maybe they’re right. Since the early 20th century, Rolex has designed and crafted watches suited for the wrists of every woman, with the same standard of excellence as all the models that have built its legend. So, if “classic” means always pursuing a higher standard, if it means perpetuating tradition while combining elegance with precision, grace with resistance, beauty with performance… then the Lady-Datejust is, indeed, a classic timepiece designed for a lady.
A Keystone In The History Of Rolex

Pioneering women have always been a keystone in the history of Rolex. Since the earliest days of the brand, they have inspired the creation and development of special timepieces that would support their quest for empowerment. The Lady-Datejust is a celebration of those who dare to lead the way. It embodies precision while combining classic elegance and technical performance.

Heir To The Datejust

Unveiled in 1957, the Lady-Datejust concentrates all the attributes of the Datejust, the emblematic Rolex watch that has been a byword for style and technical performance ever since its launch in 1945. The women’s version of this date chronometer, the Lady-Datejust carries the elegance of the Datejust in a smaller size perfectly suited to a slender wrist.

A Wealth Of Versions

Sunray-finish dials, paved with diamonds or crafted from mother-of-pearl – the Lady-Datejust offers so many choices that wearers can easily find one to reflect their personality. Depending on the version, the Lady-Datejust is available with a domed, fluted or diamond-set bezel.

The Lady-Datejust is available in Oystersteel, in 18 kt yellow, white or Everose gold, or in Rolesor versions that combine Oystersteel and one of three varieties of gold (white, yellow and Everose).

28 MM Oyster Case

The Lady-Datejust’s 28 mm Oyster case is a perfect blend of proportion, robustness and elegance. The distinctively shaped middle case is crafted from a solid block of highly corrosion-resistant Oystersteel or 18 kt gold. It is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet).

Depending on the version, the Lady-Datejust is available on a three-piece link Oyster bracelet with a folding Oysterclasp; on a five-piece link Jubilee bracelet – created in 1945 especially for the Datejust – with a Crownclasp; or on a three-piece link President bracelet with a Crownclasp. A concealed attachment system ensures seamless visual continuity between the bracelet and case.

Perpetual Calibre 2236

The Lady-Datejust is equipped with calibre 2236, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Its architecture makes it exceptionally precise and reliable. Calibre 2236 is fitted with a Syloxi hairspring in silicon, patented and manufactured by Rolex. Resistant to magnetic fields, the Syloxi hairspring provides great stability in the face of temperature variations and remains up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. Its patented geometry ensures its regularity in any position.

Superlative Chronometer

Like all Rolex watches, the Lady-Datejust is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.
1914 Rolex received Class A
It follows, then, that the Lady-Datejust, like all Rolex watches, must be built to last. When created, watches were still perceived as fragile items of jewelry for women, but Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf was determined to offer a dependable wristwatch with a robust movement. In 1914 Rolex received “Class A” precision certification from Kew Observatory in England, a certification for accuracy that until then was reserved for marine chronometers.

Some of the world’s most inspiring women have chosen the Lady-Datejust to wear on their trailblazing trajectories. Rolex’s first testimonee in the arts was New Zealand soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, whose lyric soprano voice is considered to have been one of the greatest in the world. Since then, it has been seen on the wrists of notable marine biologist Sylvia Earle, golf champion Annika Sörenstam and tennis champion Garbiñe Muguruza. All are women whose steadfast determination has led them to remarkable achievements, a quality that, like the Lady-Datejust, transcends time and fashion trends.

“Ladies want the best of both worlds: a tiny watch and an accurate movement. Yet, the smaller the watch, the more difficult it is to make it accurate,” said Wilsdorf, who proved more than capable of meeting the challenge.
