  • Each Panerai watch is as unique as the heritage it embodies.

A heritage that has its beginnings in Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, when art and science made Italy famous throughout the world for its creativity and genius, where Giovanni Panerai, a businessman, craftsman and innovator, opened the city's first watchmaker's shop in 1860. A heritage that links every single detail of a Panerai watch to the purpose for which it was designed and made to fulfill. A tradition which has kept a close eye on the future, through ongoing research for technical excellence which is the main feature of every new Officine Panerai collection.

Combining Italian design and Swiss horological perfection, each year Officine Panerai reinterprets its 150-year-long passion: the creation of high precision timepieces with a strong identity rooted in distinction, aesthetics and function.
  • Giovanni Panerai opened a watchmaker's shop in Florence in 1860. The store was also a workshop and the first watchmaking school in the city. Originally located on Ponte alle grazie, the Orologeria Svizzera, as it was then called, later moved to its current location in the Palazzo Arcivescovile in Piazza San Giovanni.

Panerai had been the supplier to the Royal Italian Navy for several years when, in order to meet a military requirement, they created Radiomir, a radium-based powder that was thereafter used in the production of luminous dials and sighting instruments. In 1916, Guido Panerai registered Radiomir as the first of many patents to mark Panerai's long history in innovation.

In 1936 in the wake of the Second World War, Panerai developed the prototype of the Radiomir watch. Thanks to many innovations which made it tougher and more water-resistant, the new Panerai watch became the first underwater model that was water-resistant to a depth of 200m. At the same time, radioactive Radiomir was replaced by Luminor, consisting of the hydrogen isotope tritium, patented by Panerai for the first time in Italy in 1949.

In 1956, Guido Panerai's son Giuseppe died, and the management of the family business, along with its position as the supplier to the Royal Italian Navy under military secrecy, was handed over to engineer Dino Zei who created the trademark "Officine Panerai".

  • In 2005, Officine Panerai began sponsoring the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, the main international circuit of regattas for classic and vintage yachts. The 2012 calendar includes ten regattas that take place at locations that are important to the history of sailing.

Also participating in the PCYC regattas is Eilean, the Bermudan ketch that is Panerai's ambassador at all major vintage yacht gatherings. Because of the strong link between the brand and the sea, Panerai arranged for Eilean to undergo a long and comprehensive restoration process after she was found in poor condition.

    Eilean for CSR
Since 2011, the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge has been Panerai's platform for CSR initiatives aimed at providing physical and psychological relief through sailing for children and adults who are being treated for or are recovering from a serious illness. The initiatives are arranged in collaboration with specialist organizations and foundations and consist of days at sea aboard Eilean, the Bermudian Ketch built in 1936 in the legendary Fife boatyard, who was purchased and restored by Panerai.

  • Since 2008, Panerai has been collaborating with the Museo Galileo in Florence, which opened a new gallery in 2012 dedicated to Galileo and the measurement of time. To celebrate the opening of the new gallery, Panerai donated the first model of the Jupiterium timepiece to the museum. This remarkable planetarium timepiece illustrates the movements of the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter with its four satellites as seen from Earth.
  • Its uniqueness is the fruit of an ancient horological art which is evident from the very first stages of conceiving and designing each new movement.
The creation of the manufacture movement, the research and development of new technical functions, of new finishing methods and of aesthetic details: together these achieve an excellence born of the passion and ingenuity of a brand which has made watches for over a hundred years.
The tradition of the master watchmakers of Officine Panerai has been handed down today to a present that is composed of innovation and technology, combining the past with the most advanced frontiers of haute horlogerie.
It was the launch of the P.2002, the first of all the calibres made at the Neuch‚tel Manufacture and a tribute to the historic 8-day power reserve conceived by Panerai in the 1940s, that inaugurated a new era for the Florentine brand, an era focused on Swiss fine watchmaking with a collection boasting in-house movements featuring a strong aesthetic and functional identity.
To pay tribute to the Swiss horological art, Panerai has reinterpreted in a refined and innovative manner a fine watchmaking complication, the tourbillon (with the P.2005, P.2005/G and P.2005/S Panerai in-house movements), creating watches like Lo Scienziato and l'Astronomo, the technical and manufacturing expression of Officine Panerai.
Today with a continued emphases on innovation and technical know-how, Panerai has extended its range to over 10 movements that have been completely envisioned, conceptualized and produced in-house, allowing Panerai to be one the leading manufacturers of sophisticated in-house movements.
